What is Belkyra and how does it work?

Belkyra is an injectable prescription treatment that uses deoxycholic acid (DA), a natural salt found in the body that aids in fat breakdown. DA works by breaking down the outer layer of fat cells, helping the body process fat more efficiently. 

When injected into the fat beneath the chin, Belkyra targets and destroys fat cells in the same way. Over the next few weeks, the body naturally removes the broken-down fat through the lymphatic and circulatory systems. 

Once the fat cells under the chin are eliminated, they cannot store fat again, meaning your results are permanent and no maintenance treatments are needed.

How many treatments will I need?

The number of treatment sessions needed to achieve your desired results can vary greatly depending on the amount and distribution of submental fat. Most patients require at least two sessions, but the exact number will depend on your unique profile and goals. To ensure the best outcome, it's recommended to have no more than one treatment per month.

What to expect from recovery?

You may experience some bruising, swelling, inflammation, tenderness, redness, and temporary numbness at the injection site. Less common complications can include difficulty swallowing (dysphagia), skin ulceration, or temporary nerve injury. However, most side effects, including swelling, typically resolve within a few days.

Most people can return to their usual activities straight after the procedure. Wearing a compression garment can help reduce swelling, but there are no strict recovery requirements. It’s a non-invasive treatment with no serious side effects or lengthy recovery time.
